How matting agent works
-Extinction principle
As the solvent volatilizes and the paint film draws when it
dries, the matting agent powder will disperse evenly in the
paint film to get a rough finish.

How to use
the matting agent well
- High mattability
1) Bigger particle size
Normally, with bigger particle size, a stronger matting
effect will be achieved. Please note that the soft feeling
and appearance of the paint film will be influenced if the
particle size is too big. So customer should choose the
suitable product according to your own specifications and
application.
2) Higher pore volume
Normally, the higher the pore volume is, the stronger the
matting effect will be.
- High transparency
1) Smaller particle size
The transparency of the paint film will increase if the
particle size of matting agent is smaller. Please note that
the mattability will be decreased accordingly. So customer
should choose the suitable product according to your own
specifications.
2) Surface treatment
The wettability between the matting agent and the binder is
different for different surface treatment, so much so that
the transparency will be influenced. Customers should choose
the suitable product according to the actual binder systems.
Wetting and dispersing agent are also suggested if
necessary.
Please note that the transparency of the paint film may vary
from the recoating transparency. Some materials, such as
additives and pigments, may also influence the transparency
in the paint due to poor chemical and/or material
compatibility.
- Soft feeling of paint film
1) Surface treatment
A product with an organic treatment will improve the soft
feeling of the paint film much more than those without
organic treatment.
2) Particle size and the distribution of the particles
In general, the smaller particle size, the better soft
feeling. At the same time, the distribution of particles and
surface treatment will also influence the soft feeling. So
customers should choose product according to your
specifications. If necessary, some wax and silicone
additives are suggested help to improve the surface effect.
- Anti-Settling
All matting agents will have a sedimentation problem in
coatings during the storage time. The situation may vary due
to different products and systems. Normally the
anti-settling property of those products organically treated
will be better. We suggest that the customer use some
anti-settling agent in paint formulations, such as fumed
silica and wax, etc.
- Surface effect
The orientation of matting agent is very different in paint
during the solvent volatilizing. Some silicone additives
will give you much better effect.
- Anti-scratching and anti- abrading effect
The surface treatment will help a lot to improve the
anti-scratching and anti-abrading effect. If necessary, wax
additives with a high melting point are also strongly
recommended.
